Organizing Your Outdoor Spaces for Summer
Chicagoland is so lucky in terms of weather this year – because summer is here early and seems like it’s here to stay! Who doesn’t love warm temps and long days? I for one sure do!
To ensure you’re able to get the most out of your summer, I wanted to share a few of my tips that will help you keep your outdoor spaces prepped for summer, organized, fresh, and ready for both relaxing as well as entertaining.
Decluttering and Cleaning
1. Start with a Clean Slate: Begin by decluttering your outdoor areas. Remove any items that are broken, unused, or out of season. This includes old garden tools, damaged furniture, and any debris that may have accumulated over the winter. A thorough cleaning will give you a blank canvas to work with.
2. Deep Clean Surfaces: Power wash your patios, decks, and walkways to remove all of that yucky dirt and grime. This step not only makes your spaces look fresh, it also prolongs the life (and curb appeal) of your home. Don’t forget to clean outdoor furniture, cushions, and rugs. For a natural cleaning solution, try a mix of vinegar, dish soap, and water.
Functional Layouts and Zoning
3. Define Your Zones: Create specific areas for different activities. Designate spaces for dining, lounging, and play. This helps in organizing your outdoor space efficiently. Use rugs, potted plants, or outdoor screens to visually separate these zones.
4. Optimize Your Furniture Arrangement: Arrange your furniture to encourage conversation and relaxation. For dining areas, make sure there’s enough space to move around comfortably. Consider modular furniture that can be easily rearranged to accommodate different group sizes.
Storage Solutions
5. Smart Storage Options: Incorporate storage solutions that keep your space tidy. Storage benches, deck boxes, and outdoor cabinets can house cushions, toys, and gardening tools. Keeping items out of sight will make your space look more organized and spacious. This deck box has been an absolute game changer in terms of keeping our outdoor pillows close at hand, yet clean and dry! Highly recommend! We got ours at Costco, but they sell various sizes and looks almost everywhere.
6. Vertical Storage: Use vertical space to your advantage. Install shelves or hanging organizers on fences or walls to store plants, tools, or decorative items. This not only saves floor space but also adds visual interest.
Outdoor Decorating Tips
Get the most enjoyment out of your space by adding square footage outdoors.
7. Add flowers and interesting foliage: Use a mix of planters, hanging baskets, and garden beds to create a lush, green, and colorful environment. Choose low-maintenance plants if you prefer less upkeep.
8. Lighting Matters: Good lighting can transform your outdoor space. String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered garden lights can create a cozy atmosphere for evening gatherings. Make sure pathways are well-lit to ensure safety. Then invite some friends over to bask in the magic of the twinkling fairy lights!
9. Personal Touches: Incorporate personal touches that reflect your style. Outdoor rugs, colorful cushions, and decorative accents like sculptures or a water feature can add character to your space. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures and colors to bring the indoors outside and create a seasonal extension of your home.
Maintenance Tips
10. Regular Upkeep: Consistency is key to maintaining an organized outdoor space. Regularly sweep, dust, and tidy up. Check for any repairs that need to be done and address them promptly. This will keep your outdoor areas looking their best throughout the summer.
11. Seasonal Updates: As the seasons change, update your décor and plants to keep your space fresh and inviting. Transitioning from summer to fall can be as simple as swapping out cushions or adding seasonal plants.
By following these outdoor decorating tips and home organization strategies, you'll be able to enjoy a beautifully organized and inviting space all summer long. Whether you’re planning a party or simply want a serene place to relax, a well-organized outdoor area can make all the difference.
